Located on the main level of the main library, the Genealogy Department maintains several collections of print and electronic materials useful in genealogy research and/or related to Holland's local history.


 
Department Schedule
Herrick's genealogy collection is available to the public during the main library's open hours.

Please Note: The Genealogy Department is not always staffed. Please call ahead (616-355-3720) to verify the department schedule if you want to make sure that a staff member will be available at the time of your visit.

Online Resources

Access Newspaper Archive:     Access the Newspaper Archive at the library
The Access Newspaper Archives are the world's largest online archive of historical newspapers. Their collection dates as far back to the as the 1700s and contains newspaper images from The Holland Evening Sentinel as well as from around the world.

Ancestry Library Edition:     Access Ancestry at the library
Access to the United States Census 1790-1930, plus access to over 3,000 databases related to genealogical and local history research.

HeritageQuest Online:     Access HeritageQuest at the library or from outside the library
This ProQuest UMI site offers genealogies, local history resources, magazines and books about people and places.

Please Note: Patrons must have a library card from a Michigan library to access Heritage Quest Online from this web site.

NewEnglandAncestors.org:     Access NewEnglandAncestors.org at the library
This site offers numerous databases of interest to genealogists. It is provided by the New England Historic Genealogical Society (NEHGS) which is the oldest genealogical society in the country.

Surname Index (Family Histories)
This database lists the family histories and partial genealogies in the Genealogy Department. Some of the family histories are in book form and shelved under the number 929.2 in the Genealogy Department. Others are in file folders in a locked cabinet and are listed under Family File or Pioneer File.

The Family File and Pioneer File folders contain varying amounts of information on the families. Some files may contain several pages of information and others may only consist of one or two pages. Please ask a staff member to open the file cabinets for you.

Holland Sentinel Microfilm Index - Announcements Search
This index to the Holland Sentinel includes birth/birthday, wedding, anniversary and obituary announcement dates for items that can be found on microfilm at the Main Library.

Holland Sentinel Microfilm Index - Article Search
This index to the Holland Sentinel allows patrons to enter a person's name to find information about articles that can be found on microfilm at the Main Library.

Internet Links
This list includes general genealogy links, websites related to Michigan genealogy and websites from the Netherlands.

The Genealogy Department receives many requests each week. Please take the following steps to make it easier for our staff to assist you.

The Genealogy Department staff can help patrons find and use materials in the genealogy collection while they are at the library. The staff also does limited research for patrons who contact them by mail or email.
